The city of Fátima is known around the world for its sanctuary and the history surrounding it. The story has it that between May and October 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd boys from Fátima on the 13th of each month in Cova da Iria. In one of the appearances, she asked them to build her a chapel there, around which today?s sanctuary was eventually built. Years ago it became a major pilgrimage site which welcomes more than five million visitors per year.
