According to the Rector of the prestigious University of Coimbra, ÔÇ£the decision of UNESCO underlines the universal value of the Portuguese culture and language, as well as the major role played by Portugal in the formation of the world as we know itÔÇØ. Coimbra becomes the 15th UNESCO World Heritage site in Portugal.Situated on a hill overlooking the city, the University of Coimbra with its colleges grew and evolved over more than seven centuries within the old town. Notable university buildings include the 12th century Cathedral of Santa Cruz and a number of 16th century colleges, the Royal Palace of Alc├í├ºova, which has housed the University since 1537, the Joanine Library with its rich baroque decor, the 18th century Botanical Garden and University Press, as well as the large ÔÇ£University CityÔÇØ created during the 1940s.
The hotel is located on one of the hills of the city of Coimbra, which in 2013 received the World Heritage classification in the historic area of the University, Alta and Sofia. It is located 100 meters from the University Hospital of Coimbra and only 15 minutes walking from the famous University, dated from 1292. Alternatively, a 2 minute walk from the hotel you can take the bus which will take only 5 minutes to get to the Arcos do Jardim located aside the Botanical Garden from the University. Near the hotel, are located other important entities related to Health and Education, as the Children's Hospital, the Portuguese Institute of Oncology, the Polo 3 of the University of Coimbra dedicated to Health Sciences, the School of Nursing and other private units that provide health care services, such as clinics and laboratories. In the surrounding there are all kinds of shops, stores, cafes, restaurants, pharmacy, etc. Opposite the hotel is located in the Celas Monastery founded in the thirteenth century.Only a 10 minute walk is the important Santo Ant├│nio dos Olivais Church founded in 1217 and, in the opposite direction but also just 10 minutes, the convent of Barefooted Carmelites and Sister Lucia Memorial. Oporto airport is about 1 hour and Lisbon airport is approximately 2 hours away. The railway station is at about 5 minutes by taxi.
