Property Description

Situated on the Alabama River just one block from the iconic Edmund Pettus Bridge, our peaceful, historic hotel is the perfect launch pad for exploring locally. Stay in the epicenter of the Civil Rights Movement & walk in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the foot soldiers that changed the world; tour a ghost town at Old Cahawba Archaeological Park or visit one of our local museums like The Old Depot Museum, Sturdivant Hall, Selma Interpretive Center, National Voting Rights Museum or Vaughan ÔÇô Smitherman Museum. Built in 1837, St. James is one of the oldest operating riverfront hotels in the US. With many of its original features, it is both interesting and vibrant with the new life of its 2021 renovation. Our hotel features guest rooms that overlook the beautiful Alabama River, our picturesque courtyard or views of downtown Selma. Each room is distinctly furnished with modern luxuries, while still giving a nod to the period it was built. We are a part of the Tapestry Collection by HiltonÔäó. This collection of hotels is a gathering of original upscale hotels that caters to guests seeking reliability and value in their independent hotel choices, with each stay backed by the reassurance of the Hilton name and award-winning Hilton HHonors program. This affords our guests the opportunity to stay in a unique hotel environment, while still feeling comfortable with the reliability of Hilton to back it up! Our restaurant, Sterling at St. James Hotel, features delightful "Elevated Southern Cuisine" for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily Monday - Saturday and breakfast & brunch service on Sundays. Full Bar service is available with local craft beer, along with domestic and imported favorites, select wines and popular liquors and liqueurs for your enjoyment. Alfresco dining is available. Our restaurant is named after Benjamin Sterling Turner, an enslaved man who was appointed to run the hotel when it changed hands in 1845. Sterling has quite a story that you can read about online by searching his name. Then there's the legend of the Outlaw Jesse James, his mistress Lucinda and their times at the St. James. Guests frequently ask to stay in one of the rooms that James stayed in, which are reportedly 301, 214, 314 and 315. There are some great tales about his times at St. James Hotel! Much of the renovation history is preserved on the second floor of the hotel and the local community is passionate about St. James Hotel and its history. St. James Hotel is the ONLT hotel in downtown Selma, which means you are close to all the sights & attractions. Civil Rights History, Civil War History and many historic districts are part of the fabric of Selma. Driving tours of these areas are quite enjoyable - and you can't miss Old Liveoak Cemetery where you will find many dignitaries along with the graves of Benjamin Sterling Turner, our restaurants namesake & Edmund Pettus - the namesake of the most famous bridge in the world! Come explore Selma! Our hotel staff stands ready to serve you. Hospitality is our passion!
